Jet Blue now has a direct flight from JFK, NYC which arrives, if on time, at around 11pm in Albuquerque. Since I know my limitations and will not attempt the 2 1/2 hour drive to Taos at that hour, I booked a hotel room in ABQ for the night when I arrived. On my most recent trip to Taos, I planned to pick up my sister, visiting from PA., on the following afternoon at the Santa Fe airport. For this reason, I had the opportunity, finally, to visit the Tinkertown Museum, located on the Turquoise Trail between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. If you happen to be a "folk art" enthusiast or an artist, as I am (both), you should work this into your New Mexico agenda. Ross Ward spent many years building this "folk art environment" for his own and your entertainment and to express his philosophy on life and creativity. If you go, allow some time to read, explore and have fun. Bring some quarters so you can set the animated displays in motion and get your fortune told. I was charmed and engaged. It is a little dusty and funky but the philosophy is dead-on.

My recently completed self-portrait, Household Head, THE SKIES AT TAOS is currently on view at the Taos Center for the Arts Encore Gallery in their Fourth Annual Self-Portrait Exhibition. This is one of a series I am developing inspired by Renaissance portraits, many of which were profile views and featured elaborate headgear. The medium is acrylic on board. |
AuthorI am an artist with studios in Peekskill, NY (see www.Brookrmaher.com) and now Taos. The Skies is my second home where I hope to make art and recharge my batteries. Archives
